So What if one day you need to buy something urgently or give money to someone urgently but you are not having a single rupee in your wallet/pocket. All you have is your mobile phone. To make things even worse, what if your phone battery is almost 0 percent or your internet isn’t available due to some network issue. What would you do in such a situation ?

What is UPI ?
UPI’s full form isĀ Unified Payment Interface (UPI). It allows fund transfer of money from one bank account to another instantly via mobile phone. Payments can be made both via Online and Offline using mobile. We are not gonna touch the topic of online payment since you already know about it.
For non-Internet based mobile devices (smartphone as well as basic phones), UPI is available offline in the form of a dialing option, *99#, and is known as USSD 2.0. Here the transactions are done through an interactive menu displayed on your smartphone screen, despite the lack of an app interface.
The most cool thing here is that the *99# NUUP service works 24*7*365 at all times!
Key services offered under *99# NUUP service
This *99# NUUP service is presently supported by all the prominent banks in India and all GSM Network service providers (like BSNL, AirTel & Vodafone Idea) EXCEPT Jio network in 12 languages, including Hindi and English. If you have a Jio SIM, then *99# NUUP service won’t work on Jio Network as of now since they are not supporting this feature.
Sending and receiving interbank account to account cash, UPI ID payments, balance inquiries, and setting or changing UPI PIN are just some of the options available through the *99# NUUP service.
Key Features of *99# NUUP service
- Supports an easy to understand and use menu-based interface for the users.
- Doesn’t require data/internet connectivity (works on signaling channel) which makes it a high availability service.
- Round the clock 24*7*365 availability (works even on holidays)
Do keep in mind that your telecom service provider will charge a nominal fee for using this service — its usually Rs 0.5 per transaction for using the *99# service. The maximum charges set by TRAI is at Rs 1.50 per transaction.
Minimum Requirements for using *99# NUUP service
- Your mobile number should be linked with your bank account.
- You should dial *99# on your registered mobile number inorder to use this service.
- Ensure that you have sufficient balance or Unlimited SMS pack since there are SMS charges involved for each transaction.
- As of now *99# NUUP service does not work on Reilance Jio Network since they are not supporting this facility. It works only on GSM networks like BSNL, AirTel & Vodafaone Idea.
- An active Debit Card is needed for one-time registration for *99# service.
How to register for *99# service
Step 1: Dial *99# from your registered mobile number and wait for reply.
Step 2: Next, a popup menu will appear with the text “Welcome to BHIM *99#, Please wait”. Click OK to continue.
Step 3: Next, select your preferred language. We have selected English for now. Later on you can change the language if needed. Press SEND to proceed.
Step 4: Now in the next screen, type you Bank’s full name or short name like SBI, HDFC, IOB, BOI, ICICI,IB, BOB, CB, PNB etc. OR you can type the first 4 letters of your bank branch’s IFSC code. After that press SEND button.
Step 5: Now another popup screen will come where you will be asked to SELECT your bank account and then press SEND.
Step 6: Next, you need to enter your debit card’s last six digits followed by a space and enter the Expiry date. For example: 123456 0122 and then press SEND.
Step 7: Once your debit card details are verified, you can set a 6 digit UPI PIN of your choice on the next popup screen. Then re-enter your UPI pin to verify it and press SEND. Now you have successfully registered on NUUP *99# service and ready to use.
How to check bank account balance without internet using *99# service
Step 1: Dial *99# on your phone via your registered mobile number.
Step 2: Select from the main menu, “Check Balance” and press SEND.
Step 3: Enter your 6 digits UPI PIN to view your bank account balance.
How to send money without internet using *99# service
Step 1: Dial *99# on your phone via your registered mobile number.
Step 2: Select from the main menu, “Send Money” and press SEND.
Step 3: Next, enter your 6 digits UPI PIN to login.
Step 4: Enter the recipient’s Bank account number along with their name and IFSC code, then press SEND.
Step 5: Next, enter the desired amount that you want to send to the person.
Step 6: In the next screen you will see the preview of your receiver’s bank account details and the amount you wish to send. Confirm all the details and then tap SEND.
Step 7: If everything goes well, then your money will be transferred instantly and you shall receive a reference number in your screen followed by “Money sent successfully” message.
How to change bank account in *99# service
If you are someone who has multiple bank accounts linked with your registered mobile number, then you can easily change and select your desired bank account before sending money.
Step 1: Dial *99# on your phone via your registered mobile number and select “My Profile” option.
Step 2: Next, select “Change Bank Account” option and press SEND.
Step 3: Now enter your next bank’s name and follow the procedure which we had already explained above on how to register for *99# NUUP service.
